Madison
County Rotary Club
The Inspiration:
In 1996 the Rotary Club
of Madison County had a Meals on Wheels service program. One of its members
noticed a client was living in a house without air conditioning and in the
process of installing one for him, the club realized that the polio victim was
crawling in and out of his house and down the steps to his vehicle.
The Action:
The Rotary Club built
their first wheelchair ramp and never stopped building. They built 3 in 1996, 7
in 1997, and 17 in 1998 then about 35 to 40 each year since. As of September
2007, the Madison County Rotary Club has constructed 335 ramps, the largest
being 48 feet long. The first ramp took almost a day to build, now they can
build the same ramp in one hour. The ramps are built at no
direct costs to the recipient and members of the Rotary Club of Madison County
provide all the labor.
