Ramesh Bakshi

The Inspiration:

Ramesh Bakshi could not believe his eyes. Ramesh and his wife heard of an Indian woman in a sari sleeping near a dumpster at a Cobb county shopping center parking lot.  "These things don't happen in the Indian community because Indians in the United States are so well-educated and so well off," said Ramesh.  But it was true.

The Action:

Ramesh and his wife took care of this woman but realized there were many victims of domestic violence in the South Asian community in Atlanta but few places to turn for help.   Ramesh eventually found Raksha, the only organization in the Atlanta area that catered to Indian victims of domestic violence and abuse. Ramesh and his wife began volunteering and raising funds for Raksha.  He created an annual talent show that benefits Raksha and has raised close to $250,000 to date.
