Sandy Springs ESL

Tere and Dwight Lowell

The Inspiration

A native of Mexico, Tere Lowell came to the United States as a teacher and was astounded to realize how many immigrants could not speak English.

The Action:

Tere and Dwight Lowell started Sandy Springs ESL, a nonprofit organization that helps immigrants learn English, in 1994. Putting their own funding together and charging just a nominal fee to students, the Lovells have attracted the support of volunteers who gladly help students, who come from all over the world, learn to read, write and speak English.  Over the years, the program has grown, assisting non-native Americans with the language skills that make it possible to pursue employment or further their education in the United States. The program's good work and welcoming spirit are among the reasons that many volunteers have remained committed to the Sandy Springs ESL program since the very beginning.
